Volume Loss

Volume loss in the skin is a common sign of aging, often resulting in a sunken appearance, especially in areas like the cheeks, temples, and under the eyes. Various dermatological treatments are available to address this issue, ranging from non-invasive to minimally invasive procedures.

By combining these treatment options with a comprehensive skincare routine and healthy lifestyle choices, individuals can effectively address volume loss, restoring a youthful and rejuvenated appearance to the face. Each treatment option has its own set of benefits, considerations, and potential risks, so consulting with a qualified dermatologist is crucial to determine the most appropriate approach for individual needs and goals.

Injectable treatments

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers (e.g Juvederm, Restylane)  Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring substance in the skin that attracts water, adding volume and hydration. HA Filler provide immediate results with minimal downtime. These fillers are most commonly used on the cheeks, mid-face and smile lines however they can provide correction most areas on the face.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (e.g. Radiesse) is an injectable solution that stimulates collagen production while providing immediate volume. This treatment provides a longer-lasting result as compared to HA fillers and is suitable for deeper wrinkles and facial contouring.

Poly-L-lactic Acid (e.g. Sculptra) stimulates the body’s collagen production over time, providing gradual and natural-looking results. This treatment provides long-lasting effects, ideal for large volume loss, with results appearing over several months.

Fat Grafting (Fat Transfer) is a procedure where fat harvested from one part of the body (usually the abdomen or thighs) is injected into areas of the face with volume loss. This procedure uses the patient’s own tissue, reducing the risk of allergic reactions, and provides natural-looking, long-lasting results. Fat cells contain stem cells which can rejuvenate the skin as well as improve volume loss. This procedure is more invasive than fillers and requires a longer recovery time.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) Therapy Involves drawing a small amount of the patient’s blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and injecting it into areas with volume loss. Platelets release growth factors that stimulate collagen production and tissue regeneration, improving skin texture and volume. Results are gradual and may require multiple sessions for optimal outcomes. Common areas this treatment is performed include around the eyes or on the neck.

Honorable mention:

Topical Products (examples: Retinoids, peptides, and growth factors). These products help to promote collagen production and improve skin firmness over time. Skin care products are easy to incorporate into daily routines, provide gradual improvement and help maintain results achieved by injectable treatments.
